The Business Owner Income Gap

Why the same disability that derails an employee is catastrophic for an owner — and why it rarely gets addressed.

Business owners have no safety net by default

Employees with group LTD have a problem: the policy replaces a fraction of their income. Business owners have a different problem: there often is no policy at all. Or the one they have was bought years ago when the business was smaller, and hasn't been updated since the draw grew.

Beyond personal income, a disability creates a second crisis for the business itself — the owner is often the key person, the primary revenue driver, and the one carrying the client relationships. Their absence is a business risk, not just a personal one.

Four risks that stack on one person
⚑
Owner income protection
If the owner can't work for 6, 12, or 24+ months, what does the household receive? Owner draws are often variable and uninsured, unlike salaried employees with group LTD.
⚑
Key-person exposure
The business itself may not survive a prolonged owner absence. Key-person life and disability insurance gives the business continuity capital — to replace the person or wind down in an orderly way.
⚑
Buy-sell structure
For multi-owner businesses: what happens to the deceased or disabled partner's ownership stake? A buy-sell agreement funded by life and disability insurance defines this. Without one, surviving partners and family members end up in conflict.
⚑
Succession readiness
For owners approaching exit: is the business structured to transfer cleanly, or does its value depend on the owner's continued presence? An unplanned transition rarely returns full business value.

The most common situation: An owner who's focused entirely on building the business — cash flow, growth, hiring — and has not built the protection layer underneath it. The personal and business risks are closely linked. A disability that takes the owner out affects both simultaneously.
